FACIAL AND DENTAL TRAUMA

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are well trained and qualified to repair fractures of facial bones.   As part of his training at a level 1 trauma center, Dr. Munarov has repaired many facial bone fractures as well as facial lacerations.  Dr. Munarov performs repair of facial lacerations, facial fractures, jaw fractures, re-implantation of avulsed teeth.

Most of the facial fractures are treated in the operating room under general anesthesia.  In order to repair facial bones, Dr. Munarov utilizes small hidden incisions to expose the fractured segments. Titanium screws and plates are then used to hold the bony segments together.  The incisions are then meticulously closed to minimize formation of a scar.

Jaw fractures area also repaired with titanium screws and plates.  There are times when we may have to wire the jaw in order to allow the bony segments to heal.

When it comes to displaced or avulsed (dislodged) teeth, they can be replanted/ repositioned and splinted to adjacent teeth.  This can usually be done in the office under local anesthesia or IV sedation.  The sooner the tooth is placed back in the socket, the higher the chances that it will survive.  If the tooth is dislodged, it should be placed in buffered saline solution or milk.  Do not wipe the tooth off as it will decrease the chances of survival.  Other dental specialists such as an endodontist (root canal specialist) may need to be involved as the tooth may need a root canal and/or need to be repaired or rebuilt by the restorative dentist.
